AI Product Tools
Getting started

Requirements

What your store needs before you install AI Product Tools, including WordPress, WooCommerce, PHP, and an AI provider account.

AI Product Tools is a WordPress plugin that adds AI content generation to a WooCommerce store. Before you install it, make sure your site and your AI provider account meet the requirements below.

Software requirements

RequirementMinimumNotes
WordPress6.8The plugin checks this on activation and refuses to activate on an older version.
WooCommerceActive, 6.0 or laterThe plugin reads and writes WooCommerce products. It will not activate without WooCommerce installed and active.
PHP7.4Set by your host. Check it under Tools > Site Health > Info > Server in wp-admin.
MySQL or MariaDBA version WordPress 6.8+ already supportsThe plugin creates its own tables for Content History and automation logs using your existing database.

WordPress AI Connectors (WordPress 7.0+)

If your WordPress core supports the built-in AI Connectors system, AI Product Tools detects it automatically and can use a provider key that is already configured there instead of asking you to paste one again. This is optional: everything in this guide also works on WordPress 6.8 through 6.9 with no Connectors involved. See Choosing a provider for details.

An AI provider account

AI Product Tools is bring-your-own-key (BYOK): it does not sell AI generations, credits, or a usage allowance of its own. You connect your own account with one or more of these providers, and that provider bills you directly for what you generate:

  • OpenAI
  • Google Gemini
  • Anthropic Claude
  • OpenRouter

You only need one provider to get started. Each one needs an API key from that provider's own dashboard, which you paste into AI Product Tools during setup. See Choosing a provider if you are not sure which one to pick.

Server and network

  • Outbound HTTPS access from your server to your chosen provider's API (for example api.openai.com or generativelanguage.googleapis.com). If a firewall, security plugin, or host-level outbound filter blocks this, generation fails with a message that names the connection problem. See Provider errors.
  • OpenSSL, so your locally stored API keys can be encrypted at rest. If OpenSSL is unavailable, the plugin still works but stores keys as plain text and logs a warning, so it is worth confirming with your host that OpenSSL is enabled.
  • WP-Cron running normally (the WordPress default). Background jobs such as cleanup tasks and, on the Business plan, scheduled automation runs, rely on it.

Browser

Use a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge to manage the plugin in wp-admin. The admin screens are a modern web app and are not designed for Internet Explorer or very old browser versions.

Permissions

You need an Administrator account to install, activate, and initially configure the plugin. After setup, day-to-day generation work can be delegated to the WooCommerce Shop Manager role. See User roles and permissions for exactly what each role can do.
